I would think it much more likely that a dead person has something that will make them unalive. and whatever that is (and such things to exist) you could catch it if you got too close. It's why we kick grandma out of the house once she kicks the bucket. It's also why dead people small bad. If dead people didn't smell terrible, you'd want to hangout with them longer.

Are the Ancient Egyptians one civilization, or several? It would make sense for a civilization to rise up in that area due to its naturally renewing fertility. So it would make sense for a civilization to rise up and grow to a size than cannot be supported by the land. The civilization collapses and the land renews. A few hundred years later a new civilization rises up and though it may have some ties to the civilization that came before, there are big differences too.

Mummies were also used as firewood to power steam trains and they were also exported to the USA where their wrappings were used to make paper where they caused outbreaks of cholera and other diseases and eventually were banned.

As creepy as the medical cannibalism is, I honestly find it one of the least objectionable uses for mummies. Still reprehensible, but at least the mummies were used and acknowledged as being from a real, living human being, rather than being ground up to make pretty colors or fertilizer, or desecrated for entertainment. Don't get me wrong, it's still something I can't quite wrap my head around, but there's at least some respect coming from the fact that the consumers were eating it in hopes of gaining some of the vitality/life of the mummy, rather than treating it as a raw material of little value.
